How To: Build an Island
pragmatic furniture, 2009

This is just a random pragmatic project. I don’t have much cabinet space or room in the kitchen. Instead of spending money on a new table to eat on, I decided to just build an island out of some stuff I had lying around. A baker’s rack, a solid core door ripped in half, some pipe and flanges, a random curtain rod. Add some casters, water soluble polycrylic, and elbow grease.

3/4″ to 1″ deep holes were drilled on the underside of the top piece to fit the width of the galvanized pipe. The weight of the top piece and a snug fit on the pipes makes it secure but also easy to lift off when ready to take apart. The flanges thread in opposite directions at the ends of the pipe. So you would be constantly drilling them on and off. It also saves money to only need 4 flanges.

I did the math so that it would have 36″ standard sink height. It is 40″ x 30″ – a perfect 4:3 TV aspect ratio. If I projected TV on to the surface of it, I could put a bowl of cereal on the head of my favorite TV anchor and pretend I was eating their brains.

Now just add some cheap stools and I have a place to eat, prepare food, and more storage space. It comes apart easily for transport. Similar islands are too expensive.
