Palace Ruin closing performance with DNK Ensemble

(2016)

50' performance, hand instruments, movement algorithm, coins, sine tones, fire, custom mask

closing performance in collaboration with DNK Ensemble for James Beckett's Palace Ruin, Zuidas Amsterdam

The Paleis voor Volksvlijt (1864) burned down completely in 1929. A photograph from that time shows a side facade of the building after the fire-fighting effort, amidst a haze of smoke and debris. Beckett reconstructs this image in the form of a large sculpture that still seems to smolder and that recalls the moments immediately after the fire.

By echoing the ambitious cultural programme of exhibits and concerts staged at the original venue, Beckett arranged a series of public discussions about architecture and decay in association with TAAK, as well as a series of music performances.
